Forensic Pathology-Relevant “Patient Safety” Course

Course Description:

This course written by members of the NAME Subcommittee for Continuing Certification is designed to satisfy the American Board of Pathology Continuous Certification (CC) recommendation (as specified by the American Board of Medical Specialties) for completion of a Patient Safety Course (PSC) and will allow for the enrollee to meet the Part IV Improvement in Medical Practice requirement.  While there are PSCs offered by other organizations in general medicine and in general anatomic and clinical pathology, this course is the only one focused and specific to forensic pathology.  The course will present a number of short modules on a variety of topics relevant both to patient safety and forensic pathology.  Topics include critical values in forensic pathology and their management, forensic autopsy practice and quality assurance, human factors in error, epidemiology of error, the culture of safety, systems thinking and root cause analysis, and quality improvement and models for improvement.  Case examples from the everyday practice setting of Medical Examiners will be used to illustrate.
